Open Access

The European Commission has made open access to research publications a general principle of projects funded by the EU Research Framework Programmes, namely FP7 and Horizon 2020.

Key points:

  1. Horizon 2020 and FP7 require open access to all peer-reviewed journal articles.
  2. ‘Gold’ fees e.g. Article Processing Charges (APCs) are eligible costs for reimbursement if incurred during the lifetime of the project.
  3. Embargo periods for ‘Green’ (repository) open access are 6 months (STM)/12 months (social sciences/humanities).

For advice on compliance with Open Access requirements, including for EC projects, see Open Access Oxford (OAO. )

Open Data

Open Data is not mandatory for Horizon 2020 projects. Projects can decide whether or not to participate. If participating in the Open Data pilot projects will need to produce a data management plan as a deliverable for their project. For more information see the data management guidance on the EC’s Participant Portal.
